Description

Moulding and skirting are essential architectural elements used to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of interior spaces. They serve both decorative and practical purposes, providing a finished look while covering gaps, protecting walls, and adding character to a room.

1. Moulding (or Molding)

Moulding refers to decorative trim pieces made from wood, plaster, PVC, or MDF that are installed along walls, ceilings, doors, and windows. It adds elegance and detail to a space while also hiding joints and transitions between surfaces.

Common Types of Moulding:

Crown Moulding – Installed where walls meet ceilings to create a smooth transition.

Baseboard (Skirting Board) – Covers the joint between the wall and floor.

Chair Rail – Placed horizontally on walls to protect against chair damage while adding style.

Door & Window Casings – Framing around doors and windows for a polished look.

Picture Rail – Allows for hanging artwork without damaging walls.

2. Skirting (Skirting Board or Baseboard)

Skirting is a type of moulding specifically designed to cover the bottom of interior walls where they meet the floor. It protects walls from scuffs, furniture damage, and moisture while hiding uneven edges.

Functions of Skirting:

Protection – Shields walls from kicks, vacuum cleaners, and furniture impacts.

Aesthetics – Provides a clean, finished appearance to a room.

Concealment – Hides gaps, wiring, or uneven flooring edges.

Materials Used:

Wood (Pine, Oak, MDF) – Traditional and durable.

PVC – Water-resistant, ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.

Plaster – Decorative but less common in modern homes.
